The Apple Mosaic 2017 by Søren Lyngbye
The mosaic, made by thousands of apples, is this year created by the multiartist Søren Lyngbye. In the years 1978 – 1985 he was educated as a graphic designer and sculptor at Bellas Artes, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Det Jyske Kunstakademi, Aarhus og Akademia Sztuk Pieknych, Krakow, Poland. Søren has worked with radio, scenography, design, and had his debut as an author i 1985 with the short story “The Captain”. In Ebeltoft Søren has performed with his apple mosaics for several years. This year he is back with the apple motive of the year.
This year the motive is one of our well-known Molbo stories, “The lobsters”. An old Molbo once heard that a Norwegian ship had arrived in Æbeltoft. He had never seen Norwegians before, … So he decided to go down and say hello.
He went to the harbour, over the gangway to the ship. Not a soul could be seen, because they had all left the ship a moment ago. But on the deck crawled some lobsters which had escaped from a basket.
The Molbo thought that they were the crew of ship; he shook hands with one them and said: “Hello, little man!” But the lobster bit his hand so hard that he screamed! — when he had pulled his hand away again, he said: “They are small people, the Norwegians. But they do have a strong hand!”

About the Festival
The Society Ebelfestival

History
In 2002-2003 the members of Ebeltoft Rotary Club decided to take an initiative to create a series of activities for the town and its tourists, especially during the autumn holidays. Then the whole brain storming and development started, a long row of meetings began with participation of not only members of Rotary, but also many other volunteers. The first Ebelfestival was launched in 2004. The basis was created in the newly founded “Ebelfestival Society”.

The society
The formal responsibility for planning and implementation of the Ebelfestival is in the hands of the “Ebelfestival Society”
It is the intention to implement a festival in Ebeltoft once a year, for the pleasure and benefit of the inhabitants and the guests. The programme includes cultural events beyond the ordinary. The society is headed by a board and almost all work is done by volunteers.
The job is monitored by a series of committees and groups, many of which are in function throughout the year. Totally more than 150 volunteers work here.
The statutes of the Ebelfestival can be downloaded here Vedtægt, godkendt, 21.02.2017

Since 2004 the Ebelfestival has established 11 apple orchards in cooperation with citizens and firms at different places in Ebeltoft. Purpose of the orchards is to promote the Danish apples and at the same time show that Ebeltoft is the apple town. Today about 350 apple trees have been planted in the orchards. The trees are provided with a plate, informing about the variety and the donor of the tree.

It has only been possible to plant so many lovely apple trees because of the support from both citizens and firms, who have paid the trees. Ebelfestival has planted the trees and takes care of the maintenance of the orchards, partly by volunteers and partly with some help from the municipality. The orchards garnish Ebeltoft to the joy of many citizens who want to taste a Danish apple. For it is free to pick and taste the apples.

Having many Danish varieties in the orchards can also help to inform about the different varieties. In the orchards you can find the following varieties: Ingrid Marie, Elstar, Coxorange, Rød Aroma, Ahrista, Discovery, Skovfoged, Rubinola, Filippa, Kronprins Frederiks taffelæble, Karen Blixen and Ebeltoft æblet. The orchards are established on areas which have been provided by the municipality and by private.

You find the orchards here:
1. Right opposite Ebeltoft Strand Camping
2. Vibæk Strandvej opposite Nøset, by the apple grove
3. Near Falck
4. Near the fire station
5. In the area between Skovkrogen and Skovleddet
6. Near the three stone apples in front of Falck
7. Bøgebjerg
8. Søhusparken
9. The pathway at Foldboholm
10. Tinghøjvej in Egsmark
11. At the corner of Skelhøjevej and Solvangsvej 1
12. Motel Ebeltoft – Godthåbsvej 4

A new apple orchard will be planted this year. Once again it is possible to buy an apple tree in an apple orchard. Buy an apple tree and get a plate with a name at the tree. It can be the name of a grandchild or any other person.
There are many firms which buy a tree in order to show their support to the Ebelfestival and to Ebeltoft. A tree costs kr. 1,500 all inclusive. Any surplus goes to support the Ebelfestival. The new apple orchard 2017 will be situated in a private area near Motel Ebeltoft – Godthåbsvej 4, Ebeltoft. Here is room for approx. 10 trees.
Trees for the orchard are for sale in the tent of apple information in Festpladsen, or directly from Walter Møller, tlf: 8634 3855 e-mail: waki8400@gmail.com

This is what you get
You get plenty of pleasant social experiences. You will meet plenty of happy guests and good partners. And you can be proud of being an important piece in the Ebelfestival and a good support in profiling Ebeltoft.

About Ebeltoft
Ebeltoft
The history of Ebeltoft can be dated back to 1301 exactly. The town rather unknown before this date. It seems, however, that until then Dråby was the most important town. In the first borough privilege from 21 January 1301 which is the oldest source to the history of the town, the name is written Applatoftæ – thus a grove with apples.
Although we know almost nothing about Ebeltoft before 1301 there must have been a small urbanisation which King Erik Menved could give the City Charter. This ment that now the town was open for trade.
It is easy to image a late summer day in this little medieval town, near the church and the harbour, which is supposed to be the origin of the town, surrounded by rich orchards, and a neighbourhood with forest and thickets with wild apples, which must have been a rare sight by then.
